Sharing to Reels on Instagram Now Available to All Developers

By David Horn

Last year, we started testing Sharing to Reels on Instagram – a seamless way for people to share video content directly to Instagram Reels from some of their favorite apps, including Smule, Videoleap, Reface, VivaVideo, SNOW, B612, VITA, and Zoomerang.

Today, we are excited to announce that Sharing to Reels on Instagram is now available to all developers. Reels is our fastest growing content format, and with our Sharing to Reels integration on Instagram, people can easily share short-form videos from your app directly to Instagram Reels, where they can reach a wider audience and increase awareness of your app’s unique features and tools.

Once integrated, third-party apps will have a Reels button, so people can share videos with just one tap, removing friction for people, who previously had to download video content to be uploaded at a later time to Instagram. Once people share their videos, they’ll have the ability to customize them with Reels editing tools like audio, stickers, effects, and more.

What Can Sharing to Reels Do For You?

  • Increase Brand Awareness: Sharing videos from your app to Reels can boost brand awareness and organic traffic. Find out how a 150% increase in shared content helped Smule (one of the most popular social music apps) earn more organic traffic after integrating with Sharing to Reels.
  • Implement with Ease: With self-serve documentation (iOS, Android), you can implement Sharing to Reels on Instagram within weeks, or even days for simpler integration setups.
  • Provide Value to Your Users: Your users can now share content directly to Instagram Reels with more convenient sharing, saving them time and making sharing more accessible than ever.
  • Go Beyond the Home Feed: Your app’s content is visible through public recommendations in the Reels and Explore tabs, and will continue to gain momentum over time (versus Stories, which disappear after 24 hours). Users can also share your content through Stories and direct messages for more engagement.

“Sharing Smule videos on social media helps us earn a lot of organic traffic. To continue this momentum, we decided to incorporate Sharing to Reels on Facebook and Instagram into the app so people can save time when sharing their musical creations, and encourage others to give the app a shot. Since launching Sharing to Reels, we’ve seen a major boost in sharing activity on both platforms and overwhelmingly positive reactions from our community.”

- Kevin Carson, SVP, Global Artist and Industry Relations at Smule
