Update on Instagram Basic Display API

By Shravya Garlapati

Starting on December 4th, 2024, Instagram Basic Display API will no longer be available. In order to help make this transition as smooth as possible, partners will have 90 days from today to make the necessary adjustments before the API is no longer available.

What is Instagram Basic Display API?

Instagram Basic Display API is used to connect Instagram accounts to third-party consumer apps (via sharing Profile, Images etc).

What does this mean for you as a developer?

  • If you are not actively using Instagram Basic Display API, there is no action needed on your end.
  • If you are actively using Instagram Basic Display API, the API will no longer be available 90 days from now, starting December 4th, 2024. This means that all Instagram Basic Display API requests will fail from that day onwards.
  • Developers who already have advanced access to Instagram Basic Display API will maintain access until December 4th, 2024 and will be subject to the standard permission re-review process until that date.
  • After December 4th, 2024, there will no longer be a set of Instagram APIs for consumer developer apps.

Instagram API with Facebook & Instagram Login

  • If your Instagram Basic Display use case is a business use case centered around providing value for business and creator accounts, we encourage you to migrate to the Instagram API with Facebook Login or Instagram API with Instagram login.
  • We recently launched Instagram API with Instagram login, which makes it possible for Instagram professional accounts to onboard without a Facebook page and we’re confident that this will address most business use cases.
  • Businesses and creators can leverage this new solution or use Instagram API with Facebook Login for their respective business use cases.
