Instagram Basic Display API: Long-Lived Access Tokens now available

By Muyuan Liu

March 30, 2020 Update: We understand these are challenging times for our developer community, so we are postponing disabling the Instagram Legacy API Platform by 90 days to June 29, 2020. Remaining endpoints on the Legacy API will no longer be available after this date and your app’s users may lose functionality. We urge you to migrate to the Instagram Basic Display API without delay so that Instagram users of your app have time to transition as well. Please see this blog post for tips on getting through our App Review process.

Long-Lived Access Tokens

When we launched Instagram Basic Display API, Instagram User Access Tokens were only short-lived and valid for just one hour. Access tokens will still be short-lived by default, but you now have the option to exchange them for long-lived tokens that are valid for 60 days. To learn more about long-lived tokens, please check the developer documentation guide here.

Note

  • We will be disabling the final permission from the Instagram Legacy API Platform (“Basic Permission”) on March 2, 2020, after which the Legacy API will no longer be available. We highly encourage all developers to apply for permissions to Instagram Basic Display API on the Instagram Graph API Platform and migrate Legacy API calls well before March 2 to avoid interruption of service to their apps.
  • Instagram Basic Display API is not an authentication tool. Data returned by the API cannot be used to authenticate your app users or log them into your app. If your app uses API data to authenticate users, it will be rejected during App Review. If you need an authentication solution, please use Facebook Login instead.
