Upload policy

To facilitate the work of researchers, this document sets forth a policy for the use of an upload function on the differentially private version of the Facebook Research Tool. The purpose of this policy is two-fold. First, we understand that researchers want to add their own data to the Facebook Research Tool to facilitate their research efforts. Second, researchers also want to better understand how the Research Tool’s differential privacy functions impact a dataset. This policy allows researchers to accomplish this objective because they know the ground truth behind a dataset that they have uploaded. This policy is subject to change at any time as we work with the privacy community to explore additional options for facilitating the work of the users who access the Research Tool. The access to and use of data made available to researchers by this policy are subject to the Research Data Agreement (“RDA”) and applicable schedules.

As such:

  1. All Facebook-provided data is considered confidential information, as defined in Section 5a of the RDA.

  2. All data, including that which is uploaded into the Research Tool, may only be used for the research outlined in the research group’s proposal to Social Science One and are subject to all of the restrictions on use and disclosure set forth in Section 5b and Schedule 1 (Data Access Addendum) of the RDA.

  3. Facebook is not responsible for any data added to the Research Tool by individual researchers; each researcher accepts sole, individual responsibility for ensuring that any uploaded data has been lawfully collected and that they have permission to use it for research purposes (for example, if “open data” under a public domain or creative commons license).

  4. It is entirely up to the researcher to ensure that any data uploaded to Facebook complies with applicable laws and the terms of service of the site that hosted the content from which data may be derived.

  5. Upon request by Facebook, researchers who upload data to the Research Tool must be able to provide documentation (such as applicable licenses) to demonstrate that the uploaded data was obtained, generated, and used in compliance with applicable laws and terms of service.

  6. Pursuant to the RDA and applicable schedules, access to the Research Tool may be terminated, suspended, or revoked for any authorized researcher who fails to comply with all applicable obligations and requirements under the RDA and this policy.
