Hello everyone,
I'm encountering an issue with the WhatsApp Cloud API when trying to add and verify a Colombian phone number.
- Phone Number Attempted: +57 602 36916xx
- Automatic Conversion by System: The system changes it to +57 2 36916xx
Details:
As of September 2021, Colombia updated its telephone numbering plan:
- Old Format: Area codes were one digit (e.g., "2" for Cali).
- New Format: A "60" prefix was added to area codes (e.g., "602" for Cali).
- When I input the number in the new format (+57 602 36916xx), the WhatsApp Cloud API automatically strips the "60" prefix and reverts it to the old format (+57 2 36916xx).
Issues I'm Facing:
- Unable to Test "Send Messages with the API": This issue prevents me from testing the "Send messages with the API" feature in the developer console under Quickstart > API Setup.
- Verification Problems: After adding the number and entering the verification code, the number's status in WhatsApp Manager remains "Pending".
- Development Roadblock: These problems hinder my ability to proceed with development and testing, as I cannot fully utilize the API without a verified phone number.
Questions:
- Has anyone else experienced this issue with Colombian phone numbers?
- Is there a workaround to correctly input and verify numbers under the new numbering plan?
- Is the WhatsApp Cloud API scheduled to be updated to recognize the new Colombian area codes?
Additional Information:
- Both the old and new number formats currently connect to the same destination when dialed internationally, indicating that telecom providers support both formats during the transition.
- However, for long-term compatibility and to align with the current national numbering plan, support for the new format is essential.
Any assistance or insights would be greatly appreciated!
