Platform Updates: Operation Developer Love

This week, we sent a reminder about the POST to Canvas migration happening tomorrow and shared how to implement paging via the Graph API and FQL.

No new FBML apps

With our recent launch of Requests 2.0 and the support for iframe on Pages Tabs, we are now ready to move forward with our previously announced plans to deprecate FBML and FBJS as a primary technology for building Apps on Facebook.com (Canvas).

By moving toward iframes instead of FBML for both canvas apps and Page tabs, we are effectively eliminating the technical difference between developing an App on Facebook.com and on the web. This means you can now build apps that run across Facebook (including Pages and Canvas apps) using the same simple, standards-based web programming model (HTML, JavaScript, and CSS).

Starting Friday, March 18th, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app. While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or the Static FBML app will continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible. Lastly, we want to be clear that our deprecation of FBML does not impact XFBML, such as the tags that support social plugins.

Operation Developer Love: Europe

One of our goals with Operation Developer Love is to have more opportunities to hear from you and accelerate your app development with Facebook Platform. We’re hosting a few developer events in Europe at the end of the month and look forward to hacking and discussing the Platform with you:

  • HACK Berlin (March 25)
We will host our first ever hack outside of the US in Berlin. HACK is an event for hardcore developers who want to come learn and build “social from the ground up” experiences using Facebook Platform.
  • Facebook Developer Garage Paris (March 29)
Developer Garages are evening events for the developer community to come together and share best practices and experience developing using Facebook Platform. In this event we will have engineers and Platform team members present product and technical updates as well as take the opportunity to introduce Julien Codorniou, our new Head of Platform Partnerships for France and Benelux to the French developer community.
  • Startup Day London (March 31)
We will host our first ever Startup Day outside the US in London. Startup Days are a select event in which we invite a handful of startups to colloborate on their vision of “social” in their space. It also serves as an opportunity for the VC community, Facebook and the Startups to mingle and meet each other.
